There’s something incredibly satisfying about opening your home to friends and family. Having a dedicated guest room is a wonderful way to make visitors feel special and welcomed. But redecorating a guest bedroom (or any part of a house) can feel scary, especially when you’re working with a tight budget and a flurry of Pinterest ideas that you can’t seem to choose from.

Redecorating has been very therapeutic for me. It helps me be creative and expressive—and sometimes even hunt down unexpected bargains on Facebook Marketplace that I would otherwise have to spend a fortune on! The end goal is always to create a warm and inviting space for your loved ones to truly feel at home. And I don’t treat my guest bedroom any differently.

Think of your guest bedroom as a little sanctuary where your guests can relax and feel comfortable. Until last year, this room was a mishmash of old furniture and clutter. But with a bit of creativity and a lot of love, we turned it into a charming space that we’re proud to show off.

Invest in Multi-Purpose Furniture

When space is at a premium, multi-purpose furniture is your best friend. Think about a sofa bed or a daybed that can serve as seating during the day and a comfortable bed at night. I remember when we first moved into our home, our guest room was barely more than a storage closet. We invested in a sleek, modern daybed that transformed the room instantly. It’s a stylish seating area when we’re not hosting, and it’s always ready for guests.

Another fantastic option is a Murphy bed. These beds can be tucked away into a wall unit or cabinet when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space. A friend of mine swears by her Murphy bed, which allows her to use her guest room as a home office during the week and a guest bedroom on weekends.

Create a Cozy Sleeping Environment

The bed is the centerpiece of any guest room, so make it as inviting as possible. High-quality sheets, fluffy pillows, and a plush comforter can make a world of difference. One of my favorite tricks is to layer the bedding. Start with crisp, cool sheets, add a soft blanket, and top it off with a cozy comforter. This way, your guests can adjust their bedding to their preferences.

Consider adding a headboard to give the bed a more finished look. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even DIY a headboard using fabric and a bit of padding for a custom touch. Not only does this add to the room’s aesthetics, but it also provides a comfortable backrest for reading in bed.

Add Personal Touches

Small details can make your guests feel incredibly welcome. One simple idea is to leave a welcome note or a basket with some snacks, water bottles, and travel-sized toiletries. I always make sure to include a couple of local goodies – a small jar of homemade jam or a bar of artisan soap adds a lovely personal touch.

Think about what would make you feel at home. Fresh flowers in a vase, a stack of good books or magazines, and even a few board games can make a big difference. I’ve noticed that guests often appreciate having something to do if they wake up early or need some downtime.

Maximize Storage Space

Guests need space to unpack and feel settled. Clear out some closet space or provide a small dresser for their use. If you’re tight on space, even a set of hooks or a luggage rack can be helpful. I once stayed at a friend’s house where she had cleverly used a vintage trunk as both storage and a nightstand – it was both practical and charming.

Think vertical when it comes to storage. Shelving units can hold everything from extra blankets to books and decor. I love using stylish baskets and bins to keep things organized yet accessible. A clean, uncluttered space always feels more welcoming.

Light It Right

Good lighting is essential for creating a welcoming atmosphere. Combine overhead lighting with task lighting and ambient lighting to give the room a warm, inviting glow. Bedside lamps are a must – they allow guests to read in bed without having to get up to turn off the main light.

Consider adding a dimmer switch to the overhead light so your guests can adjust the brightness to their liking. A small nightlight can also be a thoughtful addition, especially if your guests are unfamiliar with the room layout. In our guest room, we have a lovely floor lamp with a soft, warm light that makes the room feel cozy and inviting.

Keep It Fresh

A clean, fresh room is the ultimate sign of hospitality. Make sure the guest room is spotless before your visitors arrive. This includes washing the linens, vacuuming, and dusting. Air out the room a day or two beforehand, and maybe even add a lightly scented candle or some essential oil diffusers for a pleasant aroma.

One of my favorite tricks is to use an air purifier. Not only does it keep the air clean, but it also provides a gentle hum that can act as white noise, helping your guests sleep better. Fresh flowers or a small plant can also add a touch of life to the room and improve air quality.

Infuse Your Style

Your guest room should reflect your style while being comfortable and functional for your guests. Don’t be afraid to infuse the room with your personality. This could be through artwork, color schemes, or unique decor pieces. I love displaying some of our favorite travel photos in our guest room – it’s a great conversation starter and adds a personal touch to the space.

If you’re a fan of a particular theme or style, carry that through in your guest room. Whether it’s a coastal vibe with blues and whites or a rustic look with warm, earthy tones, consistency in decor creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. Remember, the goal is to make your guests feel like they’re staying in a thoughtfully designed space, not just a spare room.

Offer Entertainment Options

Consider what your guests might like to do during their downtime. Providing a TV with access to popular streaming services can be a nice touch. A Bluetooth speaker or a small stereo system can allow them to enjoy their favorite music or podcasts.

Books and magazines are always a hit. I like to keep a selection of novels, travel guides, and even a few puzzle books on hand. It’s these little touches that make a stay more enjoyable and memorable.

Make It Kid-Friendly

If you often have families visiting, make sure your guest room is suitable for children as well. This could mean having a few toys, children’s books, or even a small crib or air mattress available. I always keep a couple of board games and puzzles in the guest room closet – they’re great for keeping kids entertained.

Think about safety as well. Ensure that the room is free of any hazards, and if the windows are low, consider adding window guards. A nightlight can also help children feel more secure in an unfamiliar place.

Consider Accessibility

If you have elderly guests or those with mobility issues, ensure your guest room is accessible. This might mean providing a sturdy chair with arms for easy sitting and standing, or even installing grab bars in the bathroom. A non-slip rug and a raised toilet seat can also make a big difference.

It’s these thoughtful touches that show you’ve gone the extra mile to accommodate your guests’ needs. When my grandparents visit, they appreciate the extra comfort and consideration, making their stay much more enjoyable.

Final Touches

Once you’ve covered all the basics, it’s time for the final touches. These small details can elevate the room from good to great. Consider adding some artwork or a statement mirror. A beautifully framed piece of art or a quirky wall hanging can add character and charm to the space.

Don’t forget about the practicalities. Make sure there are enough power outlets for charging devices, and consider providing a universal charger for guests who may have forgotten theirs. A small basket with travel-sized toiletries – shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste – is always appreciated.
